Important Message from Tim Smith IF YOU WANT TO KNOW the big difference between me and my opponent, just look at HIS campaign literature. Where does he talk about causes he championed? Where does he say anything about ideas and initiatives he generated in his 12 long years as mayor? He doesn't. Sadly, my opponent fails to mention a single area in which he played a positive and active leadership role. That's what makes us so different: Positive Leadership. I would like you to join me in taking a critical look at his campaign letter. I've taken the politically extraordinary step of reproducing it in full on this web site. You'll see that he cleverly uses it to associate himself with positive things ... without actually saying he had anything to do with them! NAUGLE SUPPORTS HIGH-RISES: My opponent brags in his letter about voting against "several" large projects, and implies that those who voted "yes" did so "after pressure from Developers and their Lobbyists." What he doesn't tell you is that he voted in favor of 17 high-rise projects in the last six years -- votes which no doubt made those "Developers and their Lobbyists" quite happy. (He also voted for the 300-foot Beach Place!)
Sentinel: "Most of the high rise development and the increases in traffic ... have taken place on Naugle's watch." Read clipping. [The Sun-Sentinel recently reported that, while painting himself as anti-lobbyist, Naugle has been pocketing money from the bosses of those lobbyists!! THE CRIME DEBACLE: My opponent writes, "Fort Lauderdale has made tremendous progress in the area of Public Safety." He notes that crime has dropped to "the lowest it has been since 1974," but fails to mention anything he did to get us there. In fact, he had been mayor for years when The Miami Herald saw our miserable FBI crime statistics and tarred us "Crime City USA." In the wake of that public safety and public relations nightmare, my opponent failed to generate or champion a single significant proposal to get us out of that mess.
NEIGHBORHOOD ISSUES: In his letter, my opponent talks about "redevelopment progress" in the Northwest, the completion of parks projects, capital improvements in the neighborhoods, and other things -- all very nice -- but he fails to mention a single initiative for which he was responsible.
READ MY OPPONENT'S LETTER: See if you can find a single positive achievement for which he takes credit as the driving force. To read his unedited letter, click here. My opponent may seem to be a nice guy with a cute daughter. He may return your phone calls, show up at your meetings, cut your ribbons and do all those things that are the hallmark of a good politician. But being a politician and being a leader are two very different things. In an time when terrorists are a real threat, developers are altering our skyline, criminals are preying on our citizens, and neighborhoods are clamoring for improvement, we need an active mayor who can lead the way, not a passive mayor who just stands there. Leadership is the key issue in this campaign. I hope you'll see that my leadership skills are proven, and that I've accomplished many good things for our city. I hope you'll give me your vote on Feb. 11. Sincerely, Tim Smith
